Drug abuse, trafficking and storage of drugs and related drug menace have been posing danger to the entire global people. Therefore, every nation and region is launching preventive measures against the dangers of drugs.

In Myanmar, the project for prevention and eradication of narcotic drugs has been laid down as a national task and work is well under way for successful realization of the project.

Narcotic drug did not originate in Myanmar but it was imported from other countries by colonialists. This being so, the habit of poppy growing was rooted in Myanmar. It is a difficult task for eradicating the narcotic drugs that have been deeply rooted in Myanmar as an evil legacy of colonialists.

However, the government, enlisting the strength of the entire national people, is making constant efforts so as to totally wipe out the menace of narcotic drugs from Myanmar soil, regarding it as a national concern.

In accordance with the guidance of Head of State Senior General Than Shwe, the government has been implementing the 15-year drug elimination project since 1999. The project is being implemented phase by phase according to its program and remarkable progress has been made in this regard.

In an effort to totally eliminate the drug menace in the nation, the government is applying tactics of arresting those involved in drug abuse and trafficking, and taking action against them. In addition, it has laid down and is implementing tasks to put an end to poppy growing.

Meanwhile, the project for development of border areas and national races is being put into practice along with the 15-year drug elimination project and the New Destiny Project.

Cultivation of poppy-substitute crops and establishment of livestock breeding and business are being introduced in regions of border areas, where poppy was grown in the past, for enhancing the socio-economic life of local people.

At the same time, Myanmar entered into an agreement with its neighbors, nations in the region and sub-region and international community, and is cooperating with them in the fight against drugs.

Therefore, Myanmar, with of without aid and cooperation from other nations, is committed to striving along with the entire national people in totally wiping out the menace of drugs, which are threatening the entire mankind, form Myanmar soil.
