Interviews of local and foreign journalists ( II )

Foreign correspondents, chief editors and those incharges of local magazines and journals, who are in Yangon to cover news on the National Convention which was resumed at Nyaunghanbin Camp in Hmawbi Township, Yangon Region on 10-10-2006, arrived at the Pyidaungsu Hall where plenary session of the National Convention was being held and covered news on attendance of the delegates and décor and holding of the plenary session.
During 40 minutes recess of the plenary session, local and foreign journalists met with Secretary of the National Convention Convening Commission Minister for Information Brig-Gen Kyaw Hsan and members and the National Convention delegates, took documentary photos and videos and raised queries on the National Convention.
Among the foreign news agencies, U Kyaw Zan Thar from BBC also attended it and interviewed with some of the National Convention delegates. These interviews were broadcast through “Global and Myanmar Affairs” programme of BBC at 8:15 pm on 18-10-2006.
The following is the reproduction of the broadcasting of U Kyaw Zan Thar’s interviews with the delegate:

U Khun Maung Toke (Union Pa-O National Organization)

U Kyaw Zan Thar - What can be happened without NLD?

U Khun Maung Toke - Nothing can be happened. They had participated in the previous times. They resigned as their own wills. If they continue to participate, they will have the right to present.

U Kyaw Zan Thar - How will National Convention be happened without Daw Su Kyi?

U Khun Maung Toke - Nothing can be happened without Daw Su Kyi.

U Kyaw Zan Thar - Are you happy and pleasant at the National Convention?

U Khun Muang Toke
- Yes, I'm.

U Kyaw Zan Thar - What makes you happy?

U Khun Maung Toke - I'm Pa O nationality. We live in Shan State (South). At the National Covention, three self-administered regions have been allotted to us according to our own national characteristics.

U Kyaw Zan Thar - May I know your name, please?

U Khun Maung Toke - I'm U Khun Maung Toke of Union Pa O National Organization in Shan State (South).

Interview with U Khin Maung Gyi (National Unity Party)

U Kyaw Zan Thar - The next person is U Khin Maung Gyi, Joint Secretary of NUP. Do you think the upcoming constitution will bring genuine national reconciliation?

U Khin Maung Gyi - I like what the commission chairman told this morning. He said that all must cooperate and coordinate for the sake of the nation. After that, it doesn't matter whether you want to fight or kill. It is the way of political parties.

U Kyaw Zan Thar - When will it be finished?

U Khin Maung Gyi - May be this is the last second or the last session. I'm not sure. It depends on how the delegates discuss intensively or not. It'll take longer if they are not satisfied and keep on discussing. It is not their fault because it is writing the whole constitution and it is the basic law of the country and you've to be taking serious interest.

U Kyaw Zan Thar - Neighbor Thailand declared to write the constitution and hold election within one-year. What do you think about it?

U Khin Maung Gyi - The Minister for Information has already explained that. The situations are totally different.

U Kyaw Zan Thar - Will the NUP join the election when the constitution emerges?

U Khin Maung Gyi - The NUP will join the election. It is not important whether becoming government or not. Whoever rule the nation, we'll support to do the job properly. We'll point out if they make mistakes and we'll give applause if they do well. If we're elected, we'll form the government.

U Kyaw Zan Thar - If NLD joins the election officially and has a chance to form the coalition Government with the NUP, what is your opinion?

U Khin Maung Gyi - It depends on the policy platform. It will be possible if there is harmony of policy and willingness.

U Kyaw Zan Thar - Does the NUP agree the Federal Union which is the inspiration of national races?

U Khin Maung Gyi - The only problem is the term of “federal”. This constitution provides (three) components of sovereignty to the State and Autonomous Unit which was never given before. In stead of using the term “federal”, it provides the right of self-administration or self-determination. They must never forget that they are part and parcel of the Union. They must never forget that this is one solid Union.

U Kyaw Zan Thar - The role of Tatmadaw is outstanding. Do you think the people will unanimously accept this?

U Khin Maung Gyi - The majority will accept it because the Tatmadaw, one of the founding fathers of the nation, struggled for the National Independence. Till today, the Tatmadaw is the most stable one among other institutions. The role of Tatmadaw will be included to some extent or for some certain amount of limited time. You can’t avoid it and you’ve to accept it.

U Hla Soe (Former NLD Representative)
U Kyaw Zan Thar - The last person I interviewed was former NLD Representative U Hla Soe of Minbuu, Saku Township who disagrees with NLD Party and is attending the National Convention as an independent representative elect. May I ask you U Hla Soe that how did you split with NLD? And may I know your purpose of attending the National Convention?
U Hla Soe - While we were attending the National Convention, Daw Su told us to boycott the National Convention. I was the first person to tell Daw Su that I couldn’t boycott and left behind the National Convention. What I want is Constitution. They split in boycotting the National Convention. I’m attending the National Convention not for wanting of power but for Constitution. After the Constitution, we will go for election. If the people accept us, we’ll win the power. If not, we won’t. So, the basic requirement of NLD is to hand over power to them according to the result of the then election. That’s why they are in opposition with Tatmadaw.
U Kyaw Zan Thar - How do you find NLD?
U Hla Soe - NLD strongly withholds the result of the then election. It still practices the confrontation and utter devastation approach.
U Kyaw Zan Thar - If so, what will happen?
U Hla Soe – They’ll ruin in their way.
U Kyaw Zan Thar - These are the interviews I’ve made when I attended the opening ceremony of National Convention which is still convening in Yangon.
