Foreign broadcasting stations and the Internet spread rumour among the civilians of Mandalay that two female students and one male student died after they had been stranded in an elevator in the fire that started at Shop No 261, ground floor of Yadanabon Market in Chanayethazan Township at 8.15 am on 25-2-2008. However, according to the investigation of authorities concerned, there were only two elevators in the market: one was used by Yadanabon Cyber and the other by Relax Restaurant. As soon as the fire started, the staff checked the elevators and kept them locked. On the morning of 26-2-2008 after the fire had been extinguished completely, the officials concerned of Mandalay City Development Committee and security officials checked the elevators but found no deaths. Authorities concerned are still conducting a thorough check. The Township Health Department gave treatment to the injured people by opening a temporary clinic to the north of Yadanabon Market and transferred 21 to Mandalay General Hospital. But no deaths were found in the case and the rumour was totally untrue. |
