Myanmar holds referendum for emergence of modern developed discipline-flourishing democratic nation

The State Peace and Development Council has been working hand in hand with the people for the emergence of a modern developed discipline-flourishing democratic nation.

In implementing this task in compliance with the seven-step Road Map, it has now reached the fourth step which is to seek the approval of the Constitution drafted in line with the basic principles and detailed basic principles adopted by the National Convention.

The referendum for ratification of the constitution of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar was held at the respective polling stations at 6 am today.

The referendum was held successfully in the whole country except 7 townships in Ayeyawady Division and 40 townships in Yangon Division totalling 47 townships, with massive turnout of the citizens.

Prior to the opening of the polling stations, polling station officers and members inspected the polling booths, the lists of voters and ballots. Exactly at 6 am, the referendum began.

Diplomats from embassies in Yangon accompanied by personnel visited the referendum being held in Mandalay, Taunggyi and Hpa-an. Chairman of the Commission for holding referendum for approval of the State Constitution U Aung Toe , members of the Commission and State, Division, District, and Township sub-commissions inspected casting of vote by the people at the respective polling booths.

Members of Red Cross Society and responsible persons helped ailing persons and disabled persons to cast votes in convenience.

Although the polling booths were to close at 4 pm, polling station officers and members arranged eligible persons who had not cast vote to be able to cast vote in some places. After the polling stations were closed at 4 pm, polling station officer and members counted votes in the presence of the responsible persons.

Reporters from Myanmar Foreign Correspondents club and editors and reporters from journals and magazines went around the polling stations and gathered news and took photos.

There were altogether 25837 polling stations in the referendum held today.
