1. The severe cyclone “Nargis” struck in the Union of Myanmar on 2nd and 3rd May caused a great lost of lives and properties in coastal regions of Ayeyarwaddy Division and damages in Yangon Division. 2. After The National Disaster Preparedness Central Committee’s meeting held at 8:30 am on 3rd May, Committee Chairman, the Prime Minister and Committee members, ministers went to the disaster hit areas to closely perform rescue and relief works for the storm victims at National level. 3. The State permits 5 billion kyats initially for carrying out relief works and up to now, over 20 billion kyats have been spent. Besides, the State accepts domestic and international donations without hesitation and the donations have been received as follows: (a) Domestic donations (up to 16th May) 5.588 billion kyats in cash and 1.79 billion kyats worth kinds totalling 7.378 billion kyats. (b) International donations (up to 16th May) 1.62 billion USD in cash and 2096.71 tons of relief supplies. 4. However, due to the fabricated news broadcasts by certain foreign medias, some international and regional organizations that do not receive true information assume that the Government is denying international relief supplies. Those who have been Myanmar alone know the true situation. 5. So, it is hereby declared that the Government and the people of the Union of Myanmar are gratefully accepting cash and kind donations for the cyclone “Nagris” hit victims. |
