National Disaster Preparedness Central Committee issues news releases No. 2

National Disaster Preparedness Central Committee releases Announcement No. 2 on 18th May, 2008. It reads:

1. As the Union of Myanmar was hit by the cyclone, Nargis, wellwishers from local and abroad are continuously donating relief fund and aids.

2. The relief aids are systematically accepted and put record by Relief Aids Acceptance and Supervisory Committee and those Relief Aids are being sent to respective affected areas by Resettlement and Reconstruction Sub-Committee soon after acceptance them. The amount of relief aids sent up to 16th May, 2008 is as follow.

(a) 363.924 tons of food, medicines, purified drinking water bottles, clothes and tents by Tatmadaw helicopters and aircrafts,

(b) 872.8 tons of food, medicines, construction materials, clothes and tents by Navy vessels,

(c) 1,471.5 tons of food, medicines, purified drinking water bottles, water purifiers, construction materials, clothes and tents by Tatmadaw trucks,

(d) 2,905.5 tons of food, medicines, construction materials, clothes and water proof tents by vessels from Inland Water Transport,

(e) Construction materials transported by over 500 trucks daily to be able to carry out construction work in respective regions by 35 Private Construction Groups.

3. In delivering relief aids, although it is difficult to reach the relief aids every parts of the affected areas without gap, forward and middle camps have been opened and are carrying out the tasks not to occour unnecessary delay.

4. Therefore, relief aids being donated by wellwishers from home and abroad reached to storm victims in time and are being used. The effective activities have been witnessed by foreign guests, local based diplomats, members of INGO and Commissioner of European Union from 14th to 17th May. More personnel from UN Organizations, delegates of foreign donor countries, INGO and wellwishers were invited witness the effective activities.
