A/H1N1 virus in humans has spread to 39 countries
The virus has not been found in Myanmar

A/H1N1 has infected 8480 people in 39 countries as from 17 April to date and 72 died of flu. In Asia and the Pacific Region, 30 people have contracted the flu in eight countries namely South Korea, China, Japan, Thailand, Australia and New Zealand, India and Malaysia.

Dr Wantanee Kalpravidh, regional coordinator of Asia and the Pacific Region Cross Border Disease Emergency Control of UNFAO and laboratory expert Dr Sudarat Damrongwatanapokin visited Yangon Diagnosis Laboratory of the Livestock and Veterinary Department on 13 May and took measures such as taking diagnostic tests on common pig diseases and unusual pig diseases, getting disease samples, promoting lab technologies and providing lab chemicals and equipment.

On 14 May, adviser of FAO Dr Murray Maclean and experts of Livestock and Veterinary Department and Myanmar Livestock Breeding Federation met with heads of state/division LVDs and discussed matters related to pig diseases, preventive measures and area risk assessment and market chain study.

Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries has issued an announcement that A/ H1N1 has not infected pigs at all in Myanmar, that the virus cannot survive if pork and pig products are well cooked at 70 degree centigrade or 160 degree Fahrenheit, and that there will be no infection of the virus if pork and pig products are cooked in a systematically hygienic way.
