Mandalay, is an ancient capital city of Myanmar, still cherishing and prevailing its cultural heritage till today. While in Amrapura of Mandalay, everyone must pay a visit to the ancient historical Bargaya Monastery. This interesting monastery is also popularly known as the Maha Waiyan Bontha Bargaya Monastery. Bargaya Monastery consists of the 7-tiered spire, Dhanu hall and Bhawga hall. There are eight brick stairways. The height of the monastery is 72 feet 18 inches from the ground to the top. The length is 92 feet 6 inches from East to West and the breadth is 64 feet 8 inches South to North. The floor is 298 feet long from East to West. Bargya Monestey was built by chief of Magwe in the time of the King Bodaw, the founder of Amrapura. In 1311, Venerable Mya Theindan Sayadaw renovated the monastery and built Bargaya Buddha images museum and Pitakat library to display a collection of over 300 Buddha images from all over the country and 5,384 invaluable religious manuscripts. Several postures of Buddha images are kept on the upper floor. Precious religious manuscripts of Pitakat, palm-leaf and parabaik manuscripts are kept on the ground floor. Bargaya Monastery was decorated with amazing masonry of brick rows, stucco carving of pinnacle, arches, finials so also beautiful turnery and sculpture of 5-tiered spire with floral relief and wooden top corners by ancient Myanmar architects. Bargaya Monastery stands as the pride of Myanmar nationals reflecting Myanma history with its rich culture and its creative works of art. |
