With abundant marine and land resources, production of agricultural crops and fish, meat and prawn has increased considerably in Myanmar.
Having many rivers, creeks and lakes, and a vast offshore area, Myanmar is not only sufficient in fish and prawn for domestic consumption but also for export. With ever-increasing population and advancing method and technology, it is not enough to use conventional methods and techniques. Accordingly, efforts are being made for breeding under modern proliferation methods so as to meet the needs of growing population.
Now, you can see the prawn-breeding center of Vantage Company Limited at Than-bon village in Pulaw Township.
“We have started to implement prawn breeding project since 2002. Our 100-pond project is being carried out on an area of 214 acres. We started with 5 ponds each has an area of 2 acres. We put about 500 thousand prawn in each pond. After four months, we obtained 7 tons from each pond totaling 350 tons. In the second phase, breeding was made in 8 ponds and 15 ponds in the third phase.”
At this center, hatching is made at its own hatchery. And the prawn is tiger type sea prawn, which are caught in Myanma waters.
Female prawns are collected for hatching. A female prawn weighing about 12 ticals can spawn about 700 thousand eggs.
Newly spawned are fed according to stage. In hatching sea prawn, water containing salinity rate from 28 to 32 ppt is to be used, and hatching is done in a room with temperature of 28 to 32 degree centigrade.
Breeding by hatching saves time and meets requirements at any time. It also prevents depletion of the species.

“We have opened a hatchery to enable others to breed. We also sell them newly spawned prawn for breeding and disseminate methods and techniques. Hatching our self and breeding also saves foreign exchange.”
Such systematic breeding can fulfill the needs for consumption and enable local people to get jobs, thus contributing to regional development. Accordingly, small-skill prawn breeding works have appeared and are making progress that shows a bright prospect. As it saves foreign exchange and increases income, the government is providing every assistance to prawn breeding proprietors.
