Circus
The Circus …… In Myanmar

Circus is where man and animal entertain the audience with their individual feats of skill, be it tight-rope walking, gymnastics or acrobatics or the intelligence of the animals themselves as they perform feat after feat of heart pounding awe-inspiring performances.

Although there are many Myanmar circus troupes, among them the Russian trained Maung Maung Circus Troupe has been entertaining and dazzling audience with their remarkable skills for many, many years. r. Maung Maung, who went to the former Soviet Union in 1961, studied the arts of circus there. And when he returned to Myanmar, he was the person who introduced the international circus to the Myanmar circus circuit and the Myanmar circus audience.. He showed the Myanmar circus world how to meet international standards. The Myanmar Dabin Asiayone or Myanmar Theatrical Association is striving to turn out more new circus performers with high standards, from today’s young generation. Together, with Mr. Maung Maung, other Russian circus diploma holders, such as Arzarni San San, PaukSi, Kawa Sei and Tin Win are all teaming up to upkeep the standard of their art and at the same time breed a new generation of circus performers.

So for now, let's sit back in our seats and enjoy the heart beating performances of Mr. Maung Maung's Circus and decide for yourself the standard of Myanmar's Circus World.
Arzani San San (Circus Troupe Leader)
Mr. Maung Maung started his circus in 1950. I joined his circus in 1961. In that same year, Mr. Maung Maung, myself, altogether five of us went to Moscow to study circus arts for four years. After receiving a diploma in circus I returned home and went on working with Mr. Maung Maung's circus. Although it has been 10 years since my teacher, Mr. Maung Maung died, we have managed to uphold the arts of the circus in Myanmar and also have achieved to improve on our techniques and presentations. We now have over 100 performers in our troupe.
U Pauk Si (Clown Instrutor), U Kawa Sei (Clown Acrobatic Instructor), Tin Win (Animal Trainer), the three of us, still holds the jobs we did when our mentor was alive. Mr. Tin Win is the animal Trainer. Mr Kawa Sei, who is also a clown, teaches acrobat on the ground, while I, Pauk Si looks after the equipments that are required and also is in change of the acrobats.
Our performers are well-trained. But we still have to strive to acquire more equipments and trained animals.
Khin Than Oo (Female Performer)
I started out in this circus at the age of twelve. I have been performing for over twenty years. I perform on the tight-rope, the trapezes, ballet and ridding one-wheeled cycle on the ground and on the ropes. I am always preparing myself, even if I am not performing. I would like to learn the art of circus from abroad if I have the chance.
Arzini San San (Femal Performer)
Arzini San San taught me herself how to perform on the trapeze with my teeth. The trick is to bite the metal plate with the teeth while balancing the whole body. I rode a motor-cycle in the world-shaped globe since the time of my mentor and teacher Mr. Maung Maung. He taught me this act and it was very difficult at first. I had to trained very hard, to master this act.

Pont Pont Soe (Circus Performer)
My name's Pont Pont Soe. My act is to make myself very elastic in order to bend over and bite a cup with my mouth. I always have to exercise to make myself and my bones elastic to do this act. Whenever the audience applaud after my act, I feel very happy.
Mr. Aung Tin Win (Myanmar Theater Association)
There have been over 30 circus troupes in Myanmar. Mr. Maung Maung's circus troupe is one of the most well-known. Since Mr. Maung Maung headed this troupe it has a lot of well-trained high ability performers. If I may add, in my opinion, this troupe can compete with any international circus troupes. For example, the motor-cycle ride in the narrow globe is a very difficult feat by itself. I'm sure it is very hard to master.
