Elephant Survey in Hukaung Tiger Reserve

Hukaung Tiger Reserve, included in the Northern Forest Complex of Myanmar, is located in Kachin State.

It covers an area of 8,418 square miles. An administrative office has been opened in TaNai Township to conduct the tiger reserve. The Forest Department and Wildlife Conservation Society jointly organized the conservation measures there to be able to systematically extract the natural resources in long-term by the posterity .Hukaung valley region is a place rich with natural resources and the world’s rare animals, the beauty of picturesque scenes, distinctive geological condition and varieties of the tradition and custom of local national races. That’s why, the government is carrying out Tiger and elephant conservation tasks in Hukaung Valley region. The national races in TaNai region are also familiar with elephants. There are nearly 150 tame elephant in TaNai Township and they are very useful and serviceable for agriculture and transportation purposes. The elephant is a symbol of Hukaung Valley region including TaNai Township.

TaNai Township is situated in the midst of Tiger Resrve in Hukaung Valley region and it is also the main lively place of the socio-economic life for all the local nationals. Most of the locals keep in touch with the natural resources of the environs and animals inhabiting in the region.

Elephant survey project is one of the conservation tasks in the Tiger Reserve. Not only tigers but also elephants inhabit there. Now, Myanmar Forest Department and staff from Wildlife Conservation Society are jointly carrying out research and elephant conservation tasks in Hukaung Tiger Reserve, and they are also undertaking compilation of data by studying obstacles and dangers that fall in accord with the time and region.

Hukaung Tiger Reserve had been renowned as a region where Myanma wild elephants inhabited. So, research on Dung Count Population Survey is made all over the residing places of elephants depending on the data, scientifically and extensively collected concerning with the number of elephants, roaming and the dangers falling on them.

With the cooperation of WCS, Elephant Protection Units formed with forest rangers, based on TaNai of Hukaung village region, collect the samples of elephant dung by scouring thoroughly the trail of elephant roaming in the forest. In collecting the samples of the dung, measures are undertaken according to the ways and means of technological survey.

Finding of elephant dung shows the sign that elephants of various ages and sizes are residing in the survey area. As a result of the survey, it is learnt that elephants and tigers are living together in Hukaung valley region including Naga Hills.

Elephant Protection Units implement Elephant Survey Project in their assigned areas by spending for a long time in the camps of the forest and record the condition of the origins of elephant residing places.

In the field trip for making an inventory of the number of wild elephants that come to decline in Myanmar, fecal DNA based capture recapture survey is also being implemented by taking the samples of the elephant dung to study the number of wild elephants and their residing.

The main problems of declining the number of elephants in the Hukaung Valley region are- hunting and killing elephants, catching them for using as the draught-elephants and ruin of their inhabiting places. Therefore, conservation tasks are being carried out with earnest efforts.

The fresh samples of elephant dung put in the bottles are boiled for about 15 minutes. And then, keep them systematically so as not to lose the DNA samples and preparation tasks are undertaken to analyze in the laboratory. By doing so, we can know facts about the condition of the elephants prevailing in the region. This work program is important because it helps the conservation task.

Endeavors are being undertaken for the success of the objectives of elephant conservation by surveying the number of elephants and their inhabiting places in Hukaung Tiger Reserve.
