Fresh-Water fish breeding Industry

The main purpose of breeding fish in commercial scale is for enabling to obtain tasty demanding fish in much demand, easily. The important fact in breeding fish is to choose quality species which are able to grow and develop rapidly able to withstand rough handling, and with high reproduction rates, and those with less bones and are fleshy. They are various kinds of carp- Hamilton's carp, large carp and varieties of carp.

These fish are not carnivorous as they eat only natural seaweed, groundnut expeller cake, brittle sesame and bran.

Fish breeders are now breeding quality species themselves for producing the fingerlings. Most of the fishes in our county usually lay spawns from May to August.

In order to reproduce the fish, quality species are divided into their separate genders and placed in the tank. Then, female fishes are given on ingestion of LHRH A2 at 6. p.m.

Then at 12 mid-night, injection is given to both male and female and then they are together in the reproductive tank. After about 4-hours, the female fish lay eggs.

After 3 hours, these fish larva are transferred to hatching gar with a 21/2 ft diameter.

The males and females are sent back to their respective tanks after they are immersed in chemical water. These fish larva become tiny fingerlings during 14 (or) 18 hours.

These fingerlings are carefully bred until they become 2 (or) 3 inches in length.

For those fish breeders who cannot breed their own quality species, they can buy the fingerlings from the reproductive camps.

Quality fingerlings are sold at Fishery Camps under the Department of Fisheries.

The variety of carps grows fast and a carp weighing 1 tickle in weight can grow to 60 tickle within a year with regular feeding.

If 3,500 Hamilton's carp are put into an acre pond within a year you will get 2,000 viss of carp.

Fish are netted with a 25x150 ft nylon weaving net. Each grid is one inch. In order to weigh down the net in water, weights are hung at the net's edges.

By this way, the fishes that live in the depth of the pond can be caught. In harvesting time, large amount of fish are caught and distributed to respective fish markets.

The benefits gained from systematic breeding of fresh-water fish are now recognized and the businesses of fish breeding on a wider scale commercially are being implemented.
