A Gift from the Sea

Our country, Myanmar is abounded with many natural beauties such as the sea, land, forest and mountains. It will be even hard to put in words all that is beautiful in our country.

Out of these wondrous natural beauties of our land, I happen to come across a place so beautiful with its sandy-white beaches, turquoise-blue waters, astonishing beautiful coral-reefs……a well-known and famous beach which goes by the name "Ngapali".

You will never get tired of looking at the big white waves lashing the sandy white beaches, and never get bored of hearing the lapping sounds of the waves constantly hitting the beaches. You will also find all sorts of beautiful shells washed ashore, by the lapping waves of the Adaman Sea.

Today, I will be taking you to see how the natives who live around Ngapali beach, used these pretty shells brought along by the waves, as souvenirs and gifts for the visitors, who come to this beach.

It is a wonder to see these pretty shells, which can be called beauties of nature, made into wonderful decorative items and household goods by the imaginative and creative minds of the natives of Ngapali beach.

These decorative items are created by sticking small beautiful shells one to another, while others are drilled with holes where strings are attached to hold them together.

Beautiful decorative floral vases, toys, shell-chandeliers, curtains and necklaces are created artistically and sold to visitors and tourists who come to Ngapali. Although the toys made from these shells are tiny, they are very artistic and pretty to look at.

Khin Pyone Yee from Ngapali said, "We have been doing this business for over 20 years; I mean this business of making shell souvenirs. We make baskets, lampshades, curtains and all sorts of toys".

The little shells, brought along by the never-ending waves of the immortal ocean with its natural beauties, will last as long as this ocean exists.
