Today, we will be presenting to you a game, which is played by many Myanmar children. In this case, they use the seed from the fruit of the vine tree, which can be rolled easily when thrown. Gone Nyin tree is a kind of vine tree, which can thrive by wrapping around the other big tree. When we crush the pods of this tree, we get the seeds; this is called Gone Nyin Doe, for the children to play with. Three to five persons can play this game. Before you start playing the game, you have to make the choice of the Gone Nyin seeds that you will be using for the game. The round-shape seeds are the best to pitch as they roll easily. After you have made your choice of “ Gaing Doe” or “ Pyit Doe” which is the seeds you will be holding, and later on, pitching. Then, the next step, you will have to draw a straight line for the seed to be line up which in this game is called “ Gwin Phaut Chin”. |

Next, each of the players was lined up two seeds of their own on the straight line. This is called “ Doe Sue”. And there will be four places, marked in front of the straight line up the seeds. And these marks are reserved for the seeds of the players whose pitch seeds do not hit the intended targets. Behind the straight line drawn for the seeds to be lined up, another line is drawn which will be the place where the player will have to pitch their seeds, after the initiated pitching from the first side. The line is given the name “Ngoke Sie”. Whichever player, who considered as a loser is given the title “ Ngoke Thu”. Now we are showing you their seeds in turn. As the players take turns pitching the seeds, the seeds in the line-up, which hit are kept by the players who hit it. And this seed, which is hit, is called “ Ah Naing Doe”. You have to replace each seed, which is hit with another from the line up. This step is called the “ Gwin Seik” which is the job of filling up the line-up. After all the players from the first pitching line, pitch their seeds, the player whose seed is furtherest away gets to pitch first from the other side. Those players who do not hit at least two of the seeds are considered “ Ngoe Thu” or losers. Thus, they have to place their seeds, which they have been using for pitching, in front of the line-up. |

The players carry on their pitching and if anyone hits the seeds of the losers placed before the line-up; these players can come back into the game and start pitching again. The other players whose seeds are not hit and have become loser will have to wait on the sideline. So, after the players have pitched their seeds from both sides, we can pick winner and losers. These children, you are looking at now are the losers who have lost both their pitching seeds. So this is the end of the game. If they still want to play the game, each of players gets two more pitching seed and the game continue. We don’t know when and how this game came to be but in the rural areas of our country, there are many “ Gone Nyin” vines and it is easy to obtain the seeds to play this interesting game. |
