Keng Tung is situated at 2,710feeet above sea level surrounded by a panorama of jostling mountains. 37 villages are scattered throughout the surrounding mountains.
Known as the "Shan Capital", Keng Tung's population is predominantly Gon Shan. They are known to use Khun as the prefix and male names. They live mostly in Keng Tung area.
Gon Shan nationals are devotees of Buddhism so their native is full of ancient monasteries and pagodas built grandly.

"Yan Law" village near Keng Tung region abounds with recitation of Buddha's literature by children, which gives everyone a feeling of solace. Gon Shan nationals possess a rich written language and literature as well as oral tradition. For preservation of Gon Shan literature, the new generations have to learn their literature systematically in the summer holidays.

Their traditional dances are also interesting for all of us. Kainnayee dance, a kind of mythical birds, is their auspicious dance.

Thoenayar dance, which performed by two men, in side the figure of sheep-like animal are also apploused by children. One man placed at the head and the other is at the back. The two of them performed rhythmically and the dancers need to understand to each other. They played in stepping up, sitting and somersaulting. The audience very appreciated it.

The Gon Shan maidens also dance with candles melodiously. By seeing the movements in this dance we came to know how gentle and polite the maidens are!

By the way you can also observe lacquerware industry. The method used to make lacquerware in Keng Tung is similar to that of Bagan, Mandalay and Kyaukka, the central regions of Myanmar. But the shapes of the objects produced are slightly different through the craftsmanship is no way interior. They are so skillfully crafted. The ingredients used are slightly different. Prices are high because real gold leaf is used in etching the designs.
