The Graceful
Palaung Dance

Our MRTV-3 crew arrived at the town of Moegok in Mandalay Division. Moegok is 128 miles away from Mandalay and it is renowned as the Ruby Land. Myanmar nationals, such as, Bamar, Shan, Palaung, PaO and Lesu reside in Moegok.

The dance you’re going to witness is called “Palaung Dance”. The song is sung be a group of Palaung men and women while Palaung damsels dance to the song. The meaning of the song is “we are beautiful Palaung damsels. We dressed in full Palaung national costume. We preserve out culture. We entertain people with Palaung dance, wearing traditional costume at our festivals. We will eternally preserve the Palaung traditional couture”. They happily and unitedly entertained us.

At the festivals, Palaung menfolk usually entertain people with martial arts dance. The energetic dance is rhythmic and lively. Their musical instruments are cymbals, gongs and long drums called Palaung drums. Palaung drums are popular Palaung traditional musical instruments. A music troupe always contains Palaung drums, which are played by two players harmoniously.

This dance portrays sincere traditional custom and culture of the Palaung nationals.
