Taunggyi Tazaungdaing Balloon Festival

There are many significant and joyous festivals in Myanmar. Among them, is the Tazaungdaing Balloon Festival, which is held in Taunggyi, Southern Shan State. This festival is held in-line with traditional culture and customs all day through the night. Light offering festival (Light Festival) is held annually and Maha-Bon-Kahtain or Communal Kahtina Festival is also held in Taunggyi. Pa-de-tha trees, the wonder trees, that bear eight requisites for monks including robes and other essentials, are made and carried in procession around the town.

The full-moon day of TazaungMone, is the time for holding the procession of Light Festival and Competition. For the Competition, the participants start preparations nearly a month ahead ideas will be materialized beforehand.

In the Light Festival procession all boys and girls from nine wards of Taunggyi participate and they go from downtown to the Pagoda. A participation group consists of about 300 to 600 locals.

In the procession, the locals wear their traditional costumes and hold oil-lamps and paper-lanterns and round the town on decorated floats. This is one of the main attractions of the festival. Shapes and designs made with candle lights, multi-coloured bulbs and paper-lanterns, mode of dress, lights must be lit all the way until arriving at the targeted time are the factors on which marks are given and prizes are presented. The participating groups then proceeded to the Sular Muni Lawka Chantha Pagoda where they offer lights in procession.

The festival is amazingly crowded with not only visitors from various parts of the country but also from abroad.
