Mounzann Maywae

At the beginning of the cold season, the paddies have ripened and are being harvested in every field. The first crops of rice and glutinous rice are given out as donation according to traditional Myanmar custom. The glutinous rice from the first corps are pounded to make Moungzan which is the name for a Myanmar traditional snack. Moungzan is made of glutinous rice flakes which are fried dry in a frying pan, and then pounded in mortar. |

You have to keep the pounded Moungzan immersed in water for a whole night. Next, you have to fry the rice until the husks become brown and crispy. Then, the dried glutinous rice is put in a motor and pounded at least, 3 times and then we get Moungzan, which is a pounded flat glutinous rice cake. Moungzan, has the sweet smell of fresh paddy and has the sweet taste. Moungzan fried with salt becomes pop- Moungzan. Pop-Moungzan goes well with green tea. Moungzan can also be steamed with sugar and coconut to become a good eatable snack. |

Another well-liked Myanmar traditional snack is Mounzanmayway. It is made by frying glutinous rice till they become puffy, then clean them of sediments and when they are cleaned, they are mixed with sticky came sugar syrup. While they are still hot they are put into round steel cutter to shape them into tasty round Moungzan snacks. When they are cooled, the Moungzan are cut into chunks with a knife, they are called Darhlee-mayway which means Mayway slide by a knife. |

The crisp and crunchy Mounzann Maywae, with it sweet taste and smell of fresh glutinous rice and sugar syrup, is a traditional snack for the Myanmar people, young and old alike. |
