After traveling 11 kms up-river from Mandalay, we come to the Mingun Pahtodawgyi on the Western bank of the Ayeyarddy River. It is huge and can be seen from a distance. King Bodaw Phaya had it build over 200 years ago. It was to be a 500 feet high pagoda but was stopped at 162 feet. Its girth is about 450 square feet; it was just the base of the throne. Had it been completed, it would have been an amazing and huge pagoda. Now 50 metres high, it is perhaps the largest mass of bricks used in the world. You can go up the Pahtodawgyi and enjoy a bird's eye view of the Ayeyarwddy River and the MinWin hills. |
