Plays in an important role not only in Myanmar folk culture, but also in performing art and royal custom. It is assumed that its first use was in Bagan Periods. During Bagan Period a set of nine gongs (Moungs) was used in nari music troupes. In the olden days gongs were beaten in battles to marshal fighters but nowadays they are being strung up and used in Myanmar ensemble (saing) music troupes. Present day gong sets have up to (17) gongs strung in wooden frames. |
