Mainmahla Sanctuary is a place where near extinct species of rare fresh and seawater crocodiles live and bred. The crocodiles grow up to 20 to 30 feet in length at Mainmahla Sanctuary. The wildlife Conservation Group’s crocodile observation team is carrying out its second observation expedition to PoLaungLay Crocodile Nest and LayKhunKway Village crocodile nest. The journey to Polaunglay Crocodile nest through the channel is a very tedious one. The channel is big enough for only one crocodile, but it’s a place where the big ones reside. |

Since 1995, crocodiles have been coming here to lay their eggs and the caretakers and wardens of Mainmahla Island Wildlife Sanctuary take away these eggs so that they can be looked after. This is done in order to prevent the destroying of the eggs and baby crocodiles from nature’s harsh environs and other wildlives. Only when the small crocodiles can fend for themselves from nature and its enemies, they are than brought back to their habitat where they can reproduce naturally in the wild. |

By doing so, the Myanmar fresh and sea water crocodile species which are becoming rare in other parts of the world can be prevented from becoming extinct, and multiply their numbers by breeding naturally in the wild. In a way, the Mainmahla Sanctuary serves both as a environmental and endangered species protection haven where both can survive and flourish according to their natural way of life. |
