The Fascinating Oceanography of Myanmar

Myanmar is bordered by the Bay of Bengal on the west, Gulf of Mottama (Martaban) and Andaman Sea on the south. The coastline from the mouth of Naaf River to Bayintnaung Point (Victoria Point) in Kawthaung is 1,385 miles long.

The islands along the coast are the upper parts of submerged mountain ranges. The groups of islands tending parallel to the coast are Heinze group, Maungmagan group, Launglon group and Myeik archipelago. Among the 800 islands of Myeik group, the familiar islands are, from north to south, Mali, Katang, Tha-raw-the-tan-gyi, Done, Sakhanthit, Pyinsabu, Kanmaw, Lampi, Zadetgalay, Zadetgyi and Than islands.

And many species of animals live and breed on these islands and in the sea around them, you will find all sorts of species of fish and sea-creatures, such as lobsters, Shrimps, Squids and octopuses.
Sea-shrimps, crabs, dolphins and other types of sea-creatures amounting to 44 species, 18 kinds of coral-reefs, 78 species of deep-sea fish, 26 species of oysters, 4 species of sea-leech, 84 species of sea-fleas, and 23 species of sea duckweed can also be found here.

You can find all kinds of fish in all sizes, all shapes and colours swimming among the coral reefs. There are fish species that live alone while other species stay in groups.

As some types of fish are lovable and colourful, they are bred for beauty. For this kind of fish, we would like to point out one, butterfly fish. They mostly live among rocks in groups.

We can also find species like the yellow and black stripped sea-horses that can be used as household pets and when dried are used for medicinal purposes. Besides the eyes, mouth and gills on fish, there are interesting differences in fins, tails and scales. Some of the fins contain poisons, while some species of fish scales are covered by poison. And it will be of great interest to study the movements of the aquatic animals. It will also give you, contentment and joy of studying the life of these colourful and diverse creatures of the sea. Various species of fish differ in their eating habits, in what they eat, their mating habits, and the climate in which they mate, according to their shape and size.

Some kinds of fish feed on moss, duck-week while others relish on small, tiny creatures as their food. The reproduction rates of sea-creatures are in the hundreds and thousands to a single female. After the migration, some fish lay eggs from this stage of spawns and develop while some directly give birth to the fingerlings.

In the string of islands on the 1,385 miles long Myanmar coastline, there are many dense forests, wildlife, tortoise eggs, meat and fish, prawns, lobsters and crabs. Since the sea around Myanmar is mostly pristine and unpolluted, nature study is ideal thus we invite you to come and study the natural habitats of the land and sea animals fond here.
