Ancient City, Pakhan Gyi

Myanmar is a country rich in cultural heritage. Bagan and Mandalay are some of the ancient cities in which culture had flourished for centuries. The ancient Pakhangyi city is situated in Yesagyo Township, Pakkoku District, Mandalay Region in central Myanmar. There are about 382 ancient monumental buildings in the old city of Pakhan Gyi. The city walls of Pakhan Gyi are the most massive, among the remaining un-ruined city wall in Myanmar. |

Its shape is like a four cornered wooden vessel which in Myanmar we call a “Zalar” . The Si Thu Shin Pagida was worshipped. The 15 small stupas that encircled the main pagoda are workmanship of the Nyaungyan and Konbaung Era. The Pakhangyi ancient monastery was built by King Mindon in A.D 1868. It was constructed with 285 joint less teak pillars. The Pakhannge ancient monastery was built in AD1850. It has 332 pillars and eight staircases. |

Shwe U Min sanctuary and a group of pagodas were also built by the successive kings. In the compound of the sanctuary, there can be found many caves dug in the limestone hills. So, the name Shwe U Min is dedicated to those caves called “U Min” in Myanmar. The ancient edifices including the city walls in Pakhangyi cultural region bring honour to Pakhangyi. Therefore, Pakhangyi is one of the worth-while cities to visit like Bagan and Mandalay in Myanmar. |
