Planting Lemon on Commercial Scale

Yatsawk Township, which is situated in Taunggyi District of the Southern Shan State, is surrounded by forests and mountain ranges and the weather is moderately cold. Moreover, the land and water resources and its climate are suitable to grow crops. So, these factors support the development of basic economy of the region which is planting lemon trees.

Pwint Kaung and khin New Yi Co. Ltd. is located 6 miles from Yatsawk Township in Southern Shan State. Since 1991 Tat-Oo farm has reclaimed lands and chosen site for planting various trees. Now, the Co. has 200 acres of cultivable land. 20.5 acres of coffee have been planted. And Oak trees have also been planted to give shade to the coffee trees. Timber can be produced from these Oak trees. An Oak tree can produce 2 to 3 tons of timber. There are 2.68 acres of pilot cultivation of maize. And rice-beans are also being cultivated for fertilizer. Regarding the production process, the Co. has been producing Sein-Ta-Lone mangoes since 1996 as well as coffee starting from 2003.

Pwint kaung and Khin New Yi Co. Ltd. has 25 acres for lemon plantations. The production of lemon juice and preserved lemons are made of lemon fruits that are obtained from these plantations. In production of lemon juice, firstly, ripe lemon fruits are plucked, and then rinsed. Later on, squeeze lemon juice out of the ripe fruits and then boil the juice after adding required amount of sugar. After boiling it, the lemon juice can be obtained.

In production of preserved lemon fruits, the first thing to do is to clear the ripe lemon fruits in water. After that, weight them and then, they are mixed with moderate amount of crystal chloride and KMBS salt. Later on, put the mixture into glazed jars and immersed them for 45 days. Then, take out the immersed lemon fruits, which are ready to be produced as preserved lemons.

The Co. sends the preserved lemons and juice, produced from this region, to Yangon. Tat-Oo farm has been planting and producing lemon as well as other crops and fruits to local and foreign markets. Lemon planting has become a booming commercial business in Myanmar.
