People's Square
A Day in Yangon
Mingalabar! Welcome to our programme, “A day in Yangon”. Today, I would like to present to you, “ People’s Square ”.

“People’s Square” is not only the place for recreation but also the place where the visitors can study and view Myanmar’s customs, traditions, nature and natural resources. The people’s Square was inaugurated on 10th October, 1989.

It is located on 135.7 acres of land, and sandwiched between U Wizaya Road on the East, Pyay Road on the West, Ahlone Road at the South and Dhammazedi Road at the North.

At the centre of “People’s Square”, there is a water fountain where 8 white-elephants spray water in all directions from their trunks, another 4 white-elephants spray water to the four cardinal points of the square and there are also Lotus-tray and Lotus-bud shaped fountains. The most fascinating thing for the visitors who come and seek recreation in the Square is the water-sliding-garden. There are also a rock-garden and a spring where you can enjoy natural beauty and shelter yourselves under the shady trees and a water-fall. You can also have an exciting experience while enjoying the beauty of the square by walking on the suspension Bridge which connects three-big trees with one another.
There is also a statue-carved out of wood which depicts the phrase unity is strength”. In the PyiHtaungSu AyeYeikNyein Hall, the ante-room, booths exhibiting floral, forest, gems and natural resources and the Union booth are there to educate visitors on Myanmar’s diversities and resources. In the floral booth, you can study the “stone” sculpture, named “peace”, which is a gift from the city of Hiroshima, Japan. At the back of PyiHtaungSu AyeYeikNyein, you will witness the trees planted by ASEAN member leaders during their goodwill visits to Myanmar. So, if you have a chance to be here in Yangon, we would like to invite you to come and visit “People’s Square” which will give you the feeling of peace and tranquility with its greening environs and calm surroundings.
