Invaluable heritage of the Pyu

The town of watee (or) Pyu ancient fort city is situated near PhaYarGyi Village, about 5 miles South-East of HnaHtogyi Township. As the villagers found beads in the ancient Pyu city, they began producing beautiful beads that look-like the ancient Pyu beads. Chin Nationals are very fond of these beads and buy them. Thus, these beads became to be called as chin beads.

In the process of making beads, Ingyin stone has to be used because it can be easily sculptured and dyed with the colour of your wish.

The Ingyin stone has to be cut according to shape and size of the beads you are going to make. Then, the pieces of stones are put on a bamboo stick which is closed at one end and a grinder is used to grind the stone. Later on, a hole is bored through the stone by using a diamond tip driller. It is a traditional method. And then, the finished beads are polished with colouring powder on a lapidary-machine installed with a colouring touchstone.

White and black colours are used in this process. White colour can be obtained from quicklime, sand soap powder and borax powder, and black colour from ammonium-chloride, yellow orpiment, carbon and sulphur. Only breast milk is used to dissolve and seep the colour solution through the stones.

In painting the beads, we paint the beads with a bamboo brush, holding the beads with a clamp, and when drawing the designs on the beads, traditional designs are used, and then the beads are heated to brighten the colours and make them last long.

Heated beads are cooled and washed with a brush. After that, you get beautiful lovely chin beads (or) Pyu beads.

Nowadays not-only chin women but also Myanmar women are proudly wearing these beautiful and lovely Pyu’s string bead.

Moreover, the various colour of round pieces of Ingyin stones which come from china are used as raw materials. These pieces of stones are exported to china as the Chinese like these Ingyin stones.

Thus, ornamental beads once used by the ancient Pyus have now become in fashion again, and the beads producing business from PhaYarGyi Village in HnaHtoGyi Township is to be proud.
