Myanmar string instruments used to comprise the Myanmar harp (Saung-Kauk), lyre- like string instrument (Saung-Pyar), the violin (Ta-yaw), Crocodile zither (Mi-gyaung), Rakhine harp, a kind of lute (Byat-saung), banjo, mandolin, Zither-like stringed instrument (Doun-min) and Myanmar Xylophone (Patala). |

According to the new T’ang history, a troupe of Pyu entainers brought string instruments at the T’ang court in 802 AD. It is an evidence that string musical instrument have been use to play during the ThareKhittra Period. The harp technique gains superiority over the technique of other percussion instruments. It is designated that the Myanmar harp (Saung-Kauk) is the earliest and king of Myanmar musical instruments. The body of Myanmar harp Saung-Kauk is boat-shape made of Padduk wood and its hollow top is covered with stretched deer, with holes to tie one end of silk yarn strings. The carved and polished stick is of Shar wood. The string used in Myanmar harp is number from 13 to 16. |
