Sightseeing around Mandalay and Sagaing (Amarapura, Sagaing, Inn-wa, Mingun)

U Pein Bridge
If you happen to visit Mandalay, you should make a trip to Thaung-Ta-Man Lake and U Pein Bridge without fail. It is located in Taung Myo which is also known as the ancient city of Amarapura. U Pein Bridge was constructed spanning East and West across TaungThaMan Lake. The 3,967 feet long U Pein Bridge is comprised of 1086 teak pillars. It is renowned as the longest wooden bridge in the world and has been existed since over 250 years ago. It also depicts Myanma's historical heritages, architectural handiworks and culture.

Maha Gandha Yone Monastery
An interesting placed near TuangThaMan Lake is Maha Gandha Yone Monastery which is a peaceful, quiet and serene venue. It is also a re-treatment for 1,000 of sanghas to reside and practice meditation. The scene where the sanghas line up tranquilly in a long line standing to accept their daily food offered by the well-wishers, dress in uniform robes make our mind to became revere.

Mei Nu Oak Kyaung
If you pass over Myint Nge River from Mandalay, you will reach the ancient city of Inn Wa. Mei Nu Oak Kyaung is one of the prominent places in Inn Wa. Mei Nu Oak Kyaung (Maha Aung Mye Bonzan) donated by the favourite Queen Mei Nu of King Bagyidaw to her most revered abbot in (1822). The whole building is build of bricks and concrete and decorated with many relieves which are made of stucco workmanships. It is also a well-known place as well as an attraction one for tourists as ancient cultural heritages can be preserved without ruining up to now.

Sagaing Hill
Sagaing, lying on the other bank of Ayeyawaddy River, is located at the South-West of Mandalay. The Sagaing Hills are dotted with pagodas and there are over 500 monasteries and a retreat for some 600 monks and nuns.

The tunnel of “ U Min Thone Sae Pagoda” which is one of the famous and sacred pagodas in Sagaing, is 190ft long, 14 ft wide and 26 ft high. There are 30 entrance and exit ways in the tunnel and 45 Buddha Images are kept there. Another famous and venerable one is “ Hsoon Oo Ponnya Shin Pagoda”. The Hsoon Oo Ponnya Shin Pagoda perched on the highest hill gives a panoramic view of the hills, the wide Ayeyawaddy River, the Inn-Wa Bridge spanning it and across to Mandalay with its own pagodas twinklings in the sunlight.

Mingun Pahtotawgyi
From Mandalay, if you go upstream along Ayeyawaddy water route, you will find Mingun, situated on the left brink of Ayeyawaddy River bank. It is about 6 nautical miles form Mandalay. Mingun is a historic site where we can see cultural handicrafts of the arts of mason, carving wood and making items cast of Amarapura Era. Mingun Stupa is the biggest religious edifice, built with earthen bricks in the reign of King Bodaw Phayar. The stupa’s circumference is 450ft and its height is 167ft. We can perceive the handiworks of skilful persons in the art of mason and making decorative work in relief with stucco of Amarapura Era.
Mingun Bell
Mingun Bell is one of the symbols (or) landmarks of Mingun. It is made of bronze and has 55,555 viss in weight. Mingun Bell was casted in 1,770 Myanmar Era in the reign of King Bodaw Phayar. In casting, it took 3 years. The rim of the bell is over 16 ft wide and its circumference is 53 ft. From the bottom to its handle, the bell is 26 ft high. It is well known as one of the world’s Biggest hanging bells.
Myatheindan Pagoda
One of the famous and sacred pagodas in Mingun region is Myatheindan Pagoda. In 1816, King Bagyidaw Phayar built this pagoda with unique design. It is also an engrossing place for tourists.
