The Farmers Choice ... Myanmar’s Steamed Rice Cake

There are many kinds of traditional snacks in Myanmar. The steamed rice cake is one of those traditional snacks, which is made from rice. In the early morning, Myanmar people serve steamed rice cakes with green tea at breakfast. The steamed rice cake, which is made up of rice and jaggeries, is a favorite snack for both people from the countryside and the city in Myanmar.

In making the steamed rice cakes, we have to soak rice in water until they become tender. Then, the tender soaked rice is pounded in a mortar. When the rice is pounded into powder, we sift it with a sieve. And then, we have to put the rice powder into a steamer, and steam it. The steamed rice powder is sifted with a bamboo sieve for the second time. After that, we boil the jaggeries and then sift it. Next, the half of the steamed rice powder is mixed thoroughly with sifted jaggery liquid. The mixture of steamed rice powder with the jaggery liquid is then put onto a banana leaf, which is placed at the bottom of the steamer. After that, another portion of steamed rice powder without jagggery is topped on the first layer. Finally, the last layer of steamed rice powder mixed with jaggery liquid is added as the third layer.

After steaming if for half an hour, we taste the steamed rice cake to make sure of it is fully cooked or not. If it is fully cooked, we get the sweet aroma of the steamed rice cake. The steamed rice cake, a Myanmar traditional snack, is very delicious and most popular with the Myanmar people. Myanmar farmers are served hot steaming rice cake with scraped coconut strips together with green tea, early each morning, before they go to work.
