From Sandstones to Utensils

The texture of the soil near Zeti Hill in Salingyi Township, Monywa District in Sagaing Division is of sandstones. According to the nature of sandstones, the soil is a little puffy and easy to carve. So, locals from neighboring village earn their livings by making handicraft from sandstones.

In carving sandstones, firstly, it is needed to choose the sandstones of suitable sizes. Brace, chisel and cold chisel are used in carving them. When the required shape is appeared, they are to be carved roughly to become unfinished products. When the unfinished products are got, their inside and outside surfaces are smoothen. When the surfaces become smooth, sandstones handicrafts, are ready to be distributed in market.

From sandstones, stone vases, stone sculptures such as lion, and other utensils can be made. Moreover, being a rural region, locals used to make mangers from sandstones to feed cattle’s.

Sandstones are also used as the walls of houses, religious buildings and steps of pagoda stairways and in paving the roads.
