A Day in Yangon (Yangon City Hall)

Mingalabar, In today’s “A day in Yangon” programme we will be presenting “The Town hall”.

Every town or city in every country has its town hall and Myanmar’s capital, Yangon, has its own as well. Yangon city hall is one of the gracious buildings in Myanmar. It is included among the 189 ancient buildings of Yangon that has been preserved to keep their original style. Located at the junction of Sule Pagoda Road and Maha Bundoola Road, it is at the center of Yangon.

There is the Mahabandoola Park at the front of the city hall, with Sule Pagoda on its right.
Yangon City Development Committee is supervising the city’s sanitation and development work inside the building.

Before 1885, there was a Yi Pon Club in that place and in 1928, a project was initiated to build the city hall at that place. According to the project’s construction engineer U Tin of Munipcle Corporation, he had put up a Myanmar style design of the present city hall and supervised the construction, himself.

Sculpture expert Saya Khin and sons from Mandalay were incited to build the city hall to have the look of traditional Myanmar architecture designs.
The total construction took 11-years. It started in 1928 and was finished in 1939.

The city hall was decorated with Myanmar style sculptures, embossed mural walls.
Maintaining work and preserving works have been carried out to preserve and make this building last a long time.
The Yangon city hall built with all sorts of Myanmar architectural designs, arts and craft makes it the pride of our capital Yangon.
