Thameehla Island

Department of Fisheries started sea turtle conservation programmme since 1986. Thameehla Island appears as a Diamond Island in olden map. The surrounding area is about 3 square miles and situated 8 miles from Higyi Island. Due to the coral reefs around this island about 12 miles from their feeding ground. Distinguish character is that sea turtle come to lay their eggs annually. We started to implement taking programme in 2001. From 2001 to 2003, we held tag 57 turtles. We have released 35,000 turtles hatchling into the natural seawater in 1986. We have planned to promote the hatching system and to develop the research activities. At the same time, we involved extension programme for the public education.

Home to Fascinating Turtles

Via Higyi Island you can go to Thameela Island in Ngapudaw Township by boat. Sea turtles mostly green turtle always-lay eggs on the island. Officials of the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries explained to us about the green turtle.
