Survey of Hu Kaung Valley Tiger (I)

Hu Kaung valley in Kachin State in the northern most part of Myanmar has thick forests and inaccessible. An area of 2,500 square miles of the region has been designated as Hu Kaung valley sanctuary. The region has a vast expense of evergreen forest. The region with unspoilt natural environment is inhabited by endangered species of tigers of the big cat family. In order to establish the only most probable habitat of tigers in South East Asia, the programme for studying tigers was introduced.

Survey work and collection of data have been carried out by the Ministry of Forestry, environmental affairs personnel and wildlife conservation society. Dr.Alan Rabinowitz and Dr. Antony J. Lynam of the International wildlife Conservation Society participated in the programme.

There are only a few countries in the world where tiger's habitats remain, namely: India, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietam, Malaysia, Indonesia, Russia and the People's Republic of China.

Of the 8 species, Bangali tigers and Indo-Chinese tigers, whose number is the highest, have their habitat in Myanmar. Tigers have taken the top place as Flogship Species in an Ecosystem. Fro thriving the ecosystem moderately in a balance manner, the species has an important part to play, and tigers with their splendid and striking beauties are attracted and fascinated.

A study team set off for MyitKyina, Kachin State, to study endangered species of tiger. From Myitkyina, the team proceeded to snow-covered town of Tanaing. Significant feature of Tanaing is that the town is covered with mist and fog for the whole day and the Sun can be seen only for a few minutes. Majority of nationals living there are Naga and Lisu. Members of the study team met with members who had been there in advance and discussed the situation of the region and places they should visit.
