Union of Myanmar (Kayah State)

The Kayah State is situated in eastern part of Myanmar. The area of the state is over 4 thousand sq-miles and the population is over 259 thousand. The capital of the state is Loikaw.

Most of the paddy cultivation lands are irrigated. Paddy is the chief crop and other crops such as millet, maize, sesame, groundnut, garlic, and vegetables are also cultivated.

The national races are Rayah, Padaung, Paye, Yin baw, Yin kale, Paki, Kayin and small racial groups such as Manu manao, Gaykho, Gay bar are residing in Kayah State.

In addition, there are few numbers of Shan, Intha, Bamar living along Balu stream in the North and Pa-O Nationals can be found on surrounding hills.

Alabaster Sheet Factory and Hydel-Power Plant were built respectively at Loikaw and Lawpita Water-Fall of Balu stream. Valuable wood such as Teak, Pyinkadoe, Ingyin, Padauk, Thitkadoe, Thityar, Pyinma and Yinkat are produced in the Kayah State.

Kutobo or the flag mast festival is the most important one among many religious festivals of the Kayah people.

Kayan-Padaung nationals mostly live in Pan-pat village in Kayah State. Their traditional mode of dress and way of living are significant and interesting. With the belief that girls with long neck are beautiful, the girls since coming of age wear rings in the neck.This is a unique tradition of the racial group exist only in Myanmar.

The government is taking steps for all around development of Kayah State. In the past, there had been over 185,000 acres of cultivable land and now cultivation acreage increased up to 200,000. There were only two dams-Ngwetaung Dam and Moebye Dam. Now, Dawtacha Dam and Loinanpha Dam have been built and irrigated areas are over 36,000 acres.

In the transport sector, the length of road has increased to 58.5 miles compared to 396 miles in the past making transport and smooth flow of commodities.

In the communication sector, the number of telephone exchange, post office and telegraph office including microwave station has now been increased to 49 from 14 in the past.

Four 50 line auto exchanges were also installed in four villages under the rural development project.

In education sector, there were 333 basic education schools in the past and now there are 383 schools with over 47,000 students and 1,760 teachers. Altogether 8 multimedia teaching centers and 8 electronic learning centers have been opened in Kayah State. Moreover, Loikaw College was upgraded to Loikaw University.A government technological college was opened in Kayah State as well as a computer college also.

For health care activities in Kayag State, there were 16 rural health care centers in the past and now there number has increased up to 19.

And there were four station hospitals in the past and now the number has increased reaching up to 8.

Besides, a nursing and midwifery training school was already opened in the capital city, Loikaw.
