The Union of Myanmar made up of various national races. It’s a sovereign and independent nation. As union spirit, is the basic requirement for the independent and sovereign nation? All national races have been living together based on Union spirit in the Union of Myanmar. Mon State is in the Southern part of Myanmar. The Capital of the State is Mawlamyine. The majority of inhabitants are Mon, Bamar, Kayin, Rakhine, Chin, Kachin and Shan and PaO national races also live in the State. The population is over 2 million 466 thousand. The total area of Mon State is over 4 thousand 7 hundred and forty-eight square miles. The Mon State has a cultivated area of nearly three million acres. Most are paddy farms. There are a few silted-land cultivation and garden farms, other crops and plants are also grown in Mon State. |

The Mon State owned industries are Sittaung Paper Mill, Bilin Sugar Mill, Thabyuzayat Rubber Factory, Thaton Tyre Factory and Shipyard in Mawlamyine. Kyaikkhami pagoda perched on the rocks by the sea and joined to the land by a covered causeway is the main attraction. Kyaikkhami Yayle pagoda is significant and Setse is a beautiful beach resort. Zingyike waterfall not only refreshes the mind but also contributes to the people’s well being through rural electrification, using one 6-KW and three 64-KW generators, the power plant supplies electricity to Paung Township. Many ancient heritages can be found in Thaton, an ancient town. Kyaikhtiyo pagoda stands on a gold gilded boulder, precariously perched on the edge of the hill over 1,100 km above sea level. Kyaikhtiyo pagoda is famous and prominent in Mon State. In Mon State, agriculture, livestock breeding, meat and fish, forestry, industry, transportation, education and health sectors are being developed. In the road and bridge sector, total length of tarred, gravel and earthen roads in Mon State was 1,200 miles before 1988. It has now increased to over 1,500 miles. That of railroads increased from 182 miles to 275 miles number of bridges of 180 feet and above also increased from 3 to 6 Yay Creek Bridge was also opened in 2003. Thanlwin Bridge (Mawlamyine) the longest in Myanmar is now under construction. |

In education sector, the State is nurturing human resources needed for building a modern nation. Mawlamyine University, Government Technological College and Education College have been upgraded and a government computer college has also been opened. Number of basic education schools in Mon State, which stood at 1,205 in the past increased to 1,354. A total of 64 monastic education schools have been opened and multimedia classrooms have been opened in 19 basic education high school in Mon State. In the health sector, 200-bed Mon State General Hospital has been upgraded into a 350-bed hospital, a 50-bed Thaton hospital into a 100 bed one and eight 16-bed hospital into a 50-bed ones and seven 25-bed ones. Number of State hospitals was increased from 10 to 15. To provide effective healthcare services to the people of Mon State a traditional medicine hospital has been opened in Mawlamyine and number of traditional medicine hospital has been opened in Mawlamyine and number of traditional medicine clinic increased from 4 to 10. The extended cultivation of rubber helped improve the regional economy. One of the cash crops, pepper was also grown up to 10,00 acres in Mon State. |

The irrigated area of Winphanon, Shwenattaung and Wapa dams increased from 1,357 acres to over 40,000 acres now in Mon State. In the livestock breeding sector of Mon State, number of cattle raised in Mon State increased from over 1.5 million in the past to over 3.5 million now. Acreage of fish and prawn breeding ponds which stood at 400 acres in the past, reached up to 1,300 acres now. |
