Tontae is situated in Southern part of Yangon and lies beside Tontae canal, which is 21 nautical miles long, connecting Yangon River and Toe River. The main livelihoods of the locals are mostly agriculture and livestock breeding.

Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries is laying down the project for private fish breeders to expand their business, which will be beneficial to the State and fish breeding entrepreneurs. There are 30,000 acres of wetland where fish were bread in 3,089 fishponds in Tontae Township. Fresh water fish such as hamiltan's carp, variety of carp and Talapia were bread. The Variety of carp is very tasty and Myanmar love consuming them and it is also popular in the foreign-market. In breeding variety of carp 2,000 fish in 2 to 6 inches size per acre can be bred. The length of the fishpond is very long and the width is 200 ft to 300 ft. It height is 4 ft. The fish are fed sesame oil cake and bran regularly. The food fed must be 4% of fish's weight. Annual growth rate of the fish is 25 to 40 tickles. If the targeted weight is met, the fish are gathered from the ponds. In catching the fish, 900 ft long and 100 ft wide Nylon nets and a lot of manpower to scare the fish into the nets are used.

Fish, that are 3 kilos and over are packed layer by layer alternatively with ice, and then sent to fish trading centers by motorboats. Fish breeding is economically feasible because much profit is gained in a short period of time. The fish production from Shwe Mu Yinn fish breeding farm is not only sufficient for local consumption but also being exported abroad thus earning foreign currencies for the company as well as the State.
