Thriving Crops in Shan State (North)

Myanmar is an agro-based country. So the government is striving to fulfill the basic needs of the people and to strengthen national economy by implementing agricultural projects.

Being abundant with arable lands, various kinds of crops, vegetables, fruits and flowers such as paddy, beans and pulses, corn, cotton and sugar-cane can be cultivated in all the lands and orchard in Myanmar. Besides 23 million acres of cultivable lands, more than 22 million acres if vacant and virgin land can be reclaimed in the whole country.

With the vast cultivable land and its fertile soil, many crops are thriving in the entire nation. Regional crops can also be cultivated by using rain water and all types of water sources.

Shan state is situated in the Eastern part of Myanmar. It has cool climate and water is adequate for cultivation. And, I have a chance to interview with some of the officials about the successful cultivation of monsoon paddy, summer paddy, and winter crops by applying triple cropping method in Shan Sate (North).

U Kyaw Shwe
Deputy Manager
Myanma Agriculture Service (Shan State (north))

Triple cropping method is being implemented on 912 acres of land Shan State (North) 952 acres in Lashio, 78 acres in Muse, 224 acres in Kyaukme and 10 acres in Laukkai.

We cultivated monsoon paddy, winter crops and summer paddy by triple cropping method.

As winter crops we grow garlic, onion, cabbage, cauliflower and Chinese kale.

In the past, most of the local peasants cultivated only monsoon paddy. Later they also grow summer paddy. Nowadays, as water is available they cultivated vegetables between summer and monsoon paddy. In doing so, not only their family income and living standard but also of the state is increasing.

The government is now striving for the development of agricultural sector by extending utilization of land and water resources.

U Aung Naing
Chairman of Lashio District Peace and Development (council)
Irrigated area of Humon dam is 821 acres.

Concerning with the commencement of triple cropping method, in the past, there were only 200 acres using water irrigated from Human Dam. As Kaukkwe Dam was commissioned into service on 29-4-06, its irrigated area increased and cultivation could be extended up to 821 acres of summer paddy. Because of the more irrigated facilities, cultivation can be extended and income of the local peasants increased.

The fresh and hygienic vegetables produced from winter crops cultivation provide much benefit to the local people.

U Yan Phu Lon (peasant)
I have been cultivating Sin Shwe Li paddy strain since 2004.
Sin Shwe Li paddy strain yields 2 times more than that of the local paddy strains.

Garlic, mustard, bean and pulses, cabbage, Chinese Kale are cultivated as winter crops.

I’ve netted altogether 4.3 million kyats 1.3 million kyats from monsoon paddy, 1.31 million kyats from winter crops and 1.8 million kyats from summer paddy. It can be vividly witnessed that, with the benefits of triple cropping method, Shan State (North) can successfully produce crops not only for the local food sufficiency but also for distributing to other states and division.

Effective utilization of natural environment is very important. A good example of it can be observed in Shan State (North) where triple cropping cultivation is being carried out by the local peasants under the guidance of the government. These progressive changes are fruitful results of concerted efforts by the government, people and Tatmadaw.
