Wazo Food Donation Ceremony

Wazo Food Donation Ceremony is usually held significantly in Pe New Gon, Bago Division on the day after the full moon day of Wazo. It originated at Pa-O national village, one mile south of Pe New Gon. It has been held there annually for 95 years.
Fresh vegetables for the food donation ceremony have been picked up from the village plantations that mainly support the ceremony. Dishes offered to the monks are prepared at home. Offering Hsoon food to the monks is a daily meritorious deed.
Here you can see vegetables, are prepared to be cooked for Wazo Food Donation. Women from words are actively contributing their labour in preparing vegetables by slicing ladyfingers and peeling watercress and Roselle.

It is a delight to witness. Everyone busy cooking for the donation ceremony. Everybody is occupied with pounding chili. The sweet smell of fermented Shan soya-beans, which is being pounded in wooden mortars, will make your mouth water.
After making all the preparations, main dish of the food donation ceremony, the sour soup is cooked. The sour soup, which is cooked with fresh and green vegetable, looks delicious to eat. Variety of seasonal vegetable and fruits are also served to be eaten with fish-souce.

The day after the full moon day of Wazo is an extraordinary day because it is the first day of Buddhist lent. Although Wazo Food Donation Ceremonies are being held daily, well wishers offer Hsoon food to the monks. Similarly, there are separate Wazo Hsoon food donors due to its significance.

The ceremonies are very crowded with the participation of the whole region. You can see people visiting monastery to monastery by trishaws, pony cards and bicycles and even on foot. Groups of people go from one monastery to another happily enjoying the Wazo food that is offered.
