Myauk Yamar Dam

Myauk Yamar Dam is about one mile from the west of Chin Pyit village in Palae Township, Monywa District, Sagaing Division. The aim of constructing this dam is to be able to cultivate double cropping and mixed-cropping in extended irrigated areas by constructing an earth dam across Yamar Creek, and to store water from the creek in the monsoon season, as there is a scarcity of irrigated water, for the region has only 35 inches rainfall yearly.

By building this dam, 12,000 acres of farmlands can be benefited. The dam benefits both Palae and Yinmar Pin Townships. We can now cultivate monsoon and summer paddy as well as other crops through double cropping and mixed cropping. About 18,000 acres farmlands can be cultivated all the year-round. We can cultivate about 6,000 acres of monsoon paddy and about 1,500 acres of summer paddy.

The dam is 10,400 feet long and 65 feet high. Water storage capacity at full brim of the dam is 14,057 acres feet. To store more water, a temporary walling of sand bags has been built in order to store 15,500 acres feet of water.

Myauk Yamar Dam is in Palae Township, Monywa District; Sagaing Division. Construction of the dam was started in 1995-1996 and completed in 1998-1999.

The main canal of this dam is about 16 and half miles long and its distributory canal is about 34 miles long.

That’s why; it is contributing to Sagaing Division, which is the granary of Upper Myanmar. By building this dam, local people have opportunity to cultivate double cropping and mixed-cropping which are sure to get extra income for them as well as benefit for the nation.
