Akhar Weaving Training School

The Akhars ethnically belong to the Shan race and the Akhar weaving school is to be found in Kengtung, Earthern Shan Stat. This school was established by the Ministry of Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs for the economic well-being of the national races residing in Border areas. By opening this weaving school, the people of Border areas can learn the professional weaving industry for their livelihood.
This Akahar weaving school was opened in 1993. Up to now a total of 50 trainees attended the courses. It is the school where one can learn the weaving of traditional Akhar costumes, longyis, bags, ect. till one be comes skilful.

The clothes that are woven by the trainees and the handmade traditional costumes by Akhar women are also sold at the school’s shop.We can say that the Akhar weaving school in Kengtung is the vocational training school for the welfare of our kinsfolk like the Akhars.
