New Century Biotech Development Centre
Botany

The New Century Biotechnology Development has been opened for the public with the aim of giving knowledge and awareness of biotechnology to the public.

- to establish peoples, private partnership enterprises in the Universities for the development of research activities

- to establish conservatory and nursery for the ex-situ conservation of rare, endangered and endemic species

- to create research projects for the production of various useful products for mankind by using biotechnology

- to sustain environmental resources for further generations by using biotechnology

- to contribute technical training and consultancy services in the field of plant systematic and tissue culture technique.

In this centre we exhibit six different sections that are relevant to the fields of specialization and research projects undertaken in the department of Botany.

The first section concerned with Plant Systematics which is essential and vitally important to every Botanist for the identification and classification of plants as well as the preparation of herbarium sheets. In this section we choose Paphiopedilum or slipper orchid as an example to illustrate the systematic identification of different species and their cytogenetic variations.

The genus Paphiopedilum is mentioned as an Endangered Species in Cities Appendix -1 and we have 5 species in Myanmar. Here, I would like to highlight the genus P. wardii which is endemic to Myanmar and founded only in Naung Mon of Kachin State. We need to conserve these species as our national orchid resources.

In the second section we exhibit the diversity of plants in the world by poster presentation. In accordance to this presentation, diversity and conservation of plants projects have been conducted in our department in collaboration with MICCL and SEMEO CHAT groups. The field trip experiences from two States and two Divisions are presented by photo show.

The third section exhibit the equipments used in Microbiology together with the different preparations of micro-organisms from soil and plant sources. The isolation and production of effective micro-organism and their bioactive compounds in collaboration with industries could lead to the production and manufacture of antibiotics, enzymes, organic acids and various pharmaceuticals for the public. (Myanmar people)

The fourth section is the groups of potted plants which can be used for interior decorations or as an indoor plants. There are 33 plants belonging to 3 families (Araceae, Commelinaceae, Amaryllidaceae) and consisting of 8 genera.

The fifth section exhibit the procedure of plant tissue culture technique. By using this technique clonal propagation of orchids can be made and further production will continue with the collaboration of Company. Similarly medicinal plants, other useful fruits and vegetables will be propagated by using tissue culture technique. The sixth section shown in the other room is the extraction, separation, isolation and identification procedure of crude drugs from plant sources.

It is learnt that collection, reproduction and distribution of rare endangered and endemic species and research on this technology, is being carried out extensionally in cooperation with technicians from Botany Department and private entrepreneurs.
