A Glimpse of Bagan Murals

The Legacy of Bagan, special exhibition organized by Archeological Department of Ministry of Culture was shown at the national Museum. As soon as you enter the exhibition you will feel the atmosphere of Bagan because the hall room is filled with mural paintings and replicas of amazing Bagan Pagodas and temples with amazing architecture designs. Especially when you look at the murals, you will be amazed to discover the high standard of Myanmar Arts. So, let’s take a look at some copies of murals of Bagan Period. |

Firstly, we will discover the copies of murals depicting of life and livelihood of Bagan period. Pottery, farming, fishing, navigation, horse keeping and elephant keeping, traditional sports, wood cutting, water fetching etc. of Bagan period, daily activities are depicted. The drawings are so marvelous.The pottery showed here witnesses the high standard of Art during Bagan period.In the second showroom, copies of murals highlighting music dance patterns are shown. The playing of musical instruments and dance movements are very smooth and supple. Bagan period murals are drawn with the least lines and yet can represent the desired subject in the given space with appropriate colors. These murals show the high standard of Myanmar Arts. They also represent the life style in those days and also the mode of dress. |

In the third showroom, murals on the life of Lord Buddha are shown. These murals were drawn on reddish-brown base. The murals also depict lush leaves. When they depict the lotus, the stalks, the buds and the flowers were drawn creatively. In the murals Lord Buddha is drawn distinctly while the disciple Rahanda monks, the kings and his subjects, common people are also represented superbly. The apparent Myanmar people’s goodwill, generosity and piety can also be appreciated by viewing the murals. Besides, Bagan period water jug with long beak was shown. It was used for libation ceremony. In the fourth showroom, Bagan period ink inscriptions are shown. Murals of Buddha’s life, the theme was prominently inscribed with ink letters. These prominent inscriptions bring more meanings to the murals. The colors mostly used for murals were red, brown and yellow, black and white. It is also very wise to present only climatic parts of the Buddha’s life. Only just the glimpse of Bagan mural paintings can be breathless showing its high cultural standard. Anyone can be amazed to discover the wonder. |
