Talent Show on the Myanmar Bamboo Xylophone

Auspiciousness to you! all!

Our programme today features two bamboo xylophones with the sound leaves arranged normally and in reverse. A song will be played on both of them. This naturally calls for a degree of skill and mastery not within reach of every player of the xylophone. Everybody plays the xylophone with the sound leaves arranged normally, with the long lower-pitched leaves on the left and the short higher-pitched ones on the right. This is the standard arrangement for everybody; with longer leaves on the left and the shorter ones on the right. It is the basic and straightforward technique for xylophone playing.

In the reverse technique shorter and higher-pitched sound leaves are placed on the left and the longer lower-pitched ones on the right. With a proper technique, this arrangement produces tunes that are a pleasure to listen to.

The Yodaya song, ‘Panhewon” (which translates into English as Flower Forest) will be performed of two such xylophones, using the regular straightforward and the reverse techniques. The song describes the beauties of nature, with its mountains, forests, flowers, and all kinds of birds.

Now the song will be played for you .
