Some villages in Pakokku Township, Magway Division in Central Myanmar, which are far from the Ayeyawaddy River, always face scarcity of water in summer. It took up much time and labour to fetch even a pot of water from the wells which are mostly over 90 feet deep. So it was such a burden for the villagers. And the well they got was salt water and not drinkable. The majority of the farmers fetched water from the lakes which store rain water in rainy season, by cart or carrying with shoulder yoke. But capacity of water storage of the lakes depends on rain fall and cannot supply water to villagers all the year round. |

Moreover, the wells in some villages dried up in summer. Although there is a solar energy well in Magyigan village in Pakokku Township, it could not supply enough water for sufficient domestic use.Hence there is a saying; “Local populace of the villages needs no gold but water only.” Now, the needs of the people are to be fulfilled. In the long term interest, the Ministry of progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs took the responsibility to make water available in the villages. The Development Committee members drew up a 10 year plan to supply sufficient water to 8,042 villages in arid regions such as Sagaing, Mandalay and Magway and 14,567 villages in border areas. |

As a result of collective efforts of the donors and local populace, water will be available in all villages before the set target. The wells in north Magyigan village, Myin Win village, Pandaing Chon village and Kyeeywa village in Pakokku Township are now supplying water for cultivation and domestic use. As the government is planning to build wells in villages in order to fulfill needs of these regions, local populace would now be free of scarcity of water. So their socio-economic development will be enhanced. |
