To distinguish and to perpetuate genuine Myanmar music, dance and traditional fine arts, the State School of Dance, Drama and Music under the Research and Training section of the Fine Arts Department was opened in Yangon and Mandalay.

The Yangon School was first opened in 1952 in the compound of what was then the Jubilee Hall on Shwedagon Pagoda Road in Bahan township and even the 50th year, the golden jubilee of the school has been celebrated.

I am Mu Mu Khin, Principal of State School of Music and Drama.The total strength of its staff is consisting 38 consisting of one principal, 14 instructors, 16 assistant instructors and 7 clerks.
The school offers 3 year course and recruits trainees every year in March and April. Applicants for admission to the school must have the education qualification of at least the middle school level of basic education 8th standard passed, and must prove aptitude for the subject applied for age limit is between 14 and 18 years.

Moreover student from very far regions can stay at hostel free for charge.
They have to learn dancing, how to play the harp, Xylophone, Saing (Myanmar drum circle) Myanmar Oboe, Piano and Violin.Compulsory subjects are singing, notation and poems.The course are classified as 1st year, 2nd year, and 3rd year. The advanced step of every subject must be learned practically with teaching aids. After these 3 years, the certificates are presented at a ceremony held in March between the 3rd and the last week.
The graduates later staged a play for the guests to show of the skills they had obtained certificates get the chance to work in offices such as the Fine Arts Department and other artistic departments while some work on their own due to their ability.Therefore,the State School of Dance, Drama and Music, Yangon is not only making research in traditional Fine Arts but also producing new generation artists.
