The Gift of Water for Dry Zone

Bagan-Nyaung U, situated in the central part of Myanmar has only scanty rain showers, low humidity and hot weather. A few decades ago, the dwellers there had to depend solely on those rain building dams and ponds as reservoirs to store the water for round the year usage. Even then these waters are likely to evaporate with the existing high temperature during summer. At these moments, the native dwellers had to wander miles on end in search of water, and with great difficulty, had to bring back water to their own places. Shortness of water can bring a strong impact on the health and hygiene status. Furthermore, searching and fetching water, overcoming various obstacles also consume more time and energy setting drawbacks on the socio-economic aspect. |

At the present, the higher authorities had laid down five principles for the rural development which includes providing the rural area with sufficient hygienic water. Upon drilling artisan wells, it is essential to locate and survey the spot through proper technology by qualified water related technologists, geologists, physicists cooperating to clinch the goal. To have sufficient water supply the whole year round from different sources, artisans wells are still outnumbered in ratio to the population. |

Bridge Asia Japan, BAJ, is now helping out to solve this problem by the aid of advanced machineries and equipment as well as concerning technologists. Being a dry zone, it is really hard to find a proper source that would yield pure and sufficient water. During the process, the inhabitats undertakes the traditional rituals to bring rain. Only after confirming through various laboratory tests, then only the successfully drilled water is allowed to be consumed by the public. Up to the present, 20 villages and about 10,000 people are now enjoying the artisan wells sponsored by BAJ. Concrete Reservoirs are also built for storage. As water problem has been solved, the people there now have the liberty of spending more of their time concentrating on social and economic mattes peacefully. A rise in the economic status also raises the educational status of the children there and by consumption of pure hygienic water reduces occurrence of disease relating with drinking of polluted water. A group of honorary village elders are formed for the up keeping and maintenance of those wells. BAJ simultaneously educate and give training to repair of maintain those well and pipelines to selected villages preventing from destruction and malfunction. Thus, people relying on these wells can have the opportunity to use the wells for the long run with immense benefit for them. Nowadays, purified water is being hunted, and used worldwide that in Myanmar also, BAJ has been exerting their efforts to do so for the Dry Zone under the guidance and Cooperation of the Government. It is our pleasure this feature of the strenuous efforts the Authorities here trying to provide pure and hygienic water sufficiently for the native people of the Dry Zone. |
