Myanmar As Told By History

Myanmar had three great Kings who founded empires, the first empire founded by Anawrahta, the second by Bayintnaung and the third by Alaungphaya. They were the leaders who made Myanmar prosper and famous. The first Myanmar Empire was built by Anawrahta (AD 1044-1077) making Bagan to be reckoned with. He conveyed the Sacred Scriptures form Thaton and propagated Theravada Buddhism. Irrigation networks were constructed. Systematic political, economic and administrative measures made the realm affluent. Myanmar literature and culture flourished during that period.

The second Myanmar Empire was built by Bayintnaung ( 1551-1581 AD) at Hanthawaddy, Bago. The empire was prosperous, the people affluent and Thetavada Buddhism flourished. Dhamathats on legal codes were prescribed for the administration of justice. The King was a much respected leader of the time.

Founder of the third Myanmar Empire was Alaunghphayar (1714-1760 AD). Due to rivalries among principalities, the kingdom of Ava was falling apart. Alaughphayar reconsolidated the nation and established Kongbaung dynasty.
He improved irrigation systems and constructed new ones. Many literary gems were at his court and he was very fond of poetry. Legal Dhammathats, which are still referred to even today, were compiled and prescribed.
The magnificent statues of the three Kings can be seen today on the facade of the national museum.
