Taunggyi Tazaungdaing Lighting Festival
( Hot Air Ballon Launching: Day-Time Event )

Every year, Taunggyi Tazaungdaing lighting festival is held with hot air balloon launching competitions.
We are now at the foot of Sulamuni Lawkachantha pagoda hill and you will see lots of youth and children who are participating day time amateur level hot air balloon launching competition. When they become elders or when they become old they can continue to join that competition for their rising.

In the day time competition, three types of balloon are launched. The balloons are specified to be the local life of bags and toys. The judges give points on the similarities of caricatures to the depicted animals or things. It should be distinctive and natural. The most important of however is the balloon must not be burned during the launching.

Zereck : Hi! It’s very nice. It is distinct from others and it is really interesting for us.
Reporter: How did you feel the night time event?
Zereck :I’ve just arrived this morning so, we will see tonight.
Collin ( Canada ) :I’m really happy to be hosted, very interesting with a lot of history. My mother was born in this country so it makes very special for me. And the festival today is very good.
Reporter : Your mother was born here - so please tell me about your mother.
Collin : My grandmother was a Kayin. My grandfather is an Irish in the military. My mother was born in Yangon.
Reporter : So, you are also a part of Myanmar.
Collin :Yes, a little bit, 25%...... 25%
Day time competitions may be called amateur class. The young folks dominate the events by means of such competitions the youngsters come to cherish their traditional art. They were eventually ready to join the seniors in night time competitions in the future.
Mr. Brian Benett : I’m from Canada and we’ve been here about three weeks now and we have one month to stay so, it’s so great for us.
Reporter :How about Taunggyi’s weather?

Balloons launching competitions are witnessed by the local populace as well as visitors from other parts of the country and tourists. Altogether 305 balloons were launched this year.
