Ancient Htoke Kan Thein Temple

Mrauk-U is one of the ancient cities in the Rakhine State where cultural heritages have flourished since years past. A very primitive Htoke Kan Thein dwells on a 20 feet plateau near the Shit-Thaung (Eighty thousand) Pagoda in Mrauk-U. The whole mass of the Pagoda has been carved and built out of stone rock expending 110 feet from south to north, 137 feet east to went and 64 feet in heightThe temple was built in the year 1571 AD with massive long stony beans .

Actually, it was an Ordination Hall called “Thein” where the monks are entered into the Holy Order, that in combination, the temple was named, “Htoke Kan thein”.

Two stony stairways on the South and East sides of the temple lead to the ordination Hall and on the roof at the 4 Cardinal sites were built a stupa each in the form of an inverted bell.

The only entrance has a clock were spiral way with stupas on both sides of the corridor. On each and every pendant of the stupas are the stucco works revealing the standard of living as well as the proper attires and fashions of both genders. On the walls of the cavern are 146 smaller pendants with more than 330 sculpture works showing the donors making sacrifices. Furthermore, one can scrutinize and study in the cavern, 40 kinds of turbans, 9 sashes and 64 methods of doing the hair in Rakhine tradition.

Thus, the Htoke Kan Thein Ordination Temple built by King Min Pha Daung portrays the astounding magnificence of the ancient Rakhine Architectural Designs at Mrauk-U in Rakhine State.
