Kaung Hmu Daw Pagoda Festival in Sagaing

Kaung Hmu Daw Pagoda is one of the famous pagodas in Sagaing. It was built by King Tharlon in 1636 A.D. It is strange because of its hemispherical shape which is not similar with other pagodas which are bell shaped.The Pagoda festival is held annually during the Thadingyut festival. |

| . On the full moon day of Thadingyut, various organizations in connection with the celebration and people from 18 wards in Sagaing walk in royal procession to Kaung Hmu Daw Pagoda. The procession to the pagoda , 5 miles from downtown, lasts from early morning to evening. Members of the various organizations and royal entourage are eager to do meritorious deeds with great devotion. They don’t think that it is tiresome to walk the whole day regardless of sun heat. | ||||||||||||||||

| As they arrive at the pagoda, they stop for the night at respective venues on the pagoda platform, stairways and rest houses. At night, they offer lights on the platform of the pagoda. On the festival days, shops from different parts of the country open and sell regional products and it can be seen selling of Thanakha bark. At dawn of 1st waning day, various religious organizations offer alms, flowers and water to the Buddha and they say the prayers and recite the parrittas at the same time. | ||||||||||||||||
